I came, I saw and I lost myself. My first visit to Goa made this impact on me. Goa is called the 2nd paradise of India and reason behind this has to be experienced; it cannot be explained in words. The natural beauty is the blessing granted to Goa. The hills and forts covered with greenery, rivers, springs, seashores, the small villages behind the trees, high summits of the temples, the dome structures of the mosques and pillars, a huge bell hung on the churches, the sweet tunes of typical music, the language here are all mind blowing. These glimpses of Goa made me fall in love with this state. In the process of looking for geographical, political and cultural history of Goa, I became unified with these things, so much that the distance from Goa to Diu; 1,600 km couldn’t bother me at all.

Chandrapur was the first capital of Kadamba King and elder Goa was the second capital. Panjim was the capital of Portuguese. There are historical references of Satavahana, Chalukya, Shilahara, Kadamba upto Yadavs Dynasties, fort-caves, Hero Stones, Inscriptions, Copper sheets. I visited Goa a number of times to have a look at its interiors. I thought of penning down whatever I saw and heard. The ex-resident editor of Loksatta- Thane provided me with the platform. There my articles on forts, caves, temples, churches in Goa were much appreciated by the readers. In the Diwali Edition of ‘Anandache Dohi’ by Shrikrupa Prakashan my articles on Diu and Daman and in ‘Pratibha’ by Vyas creations of Diwali edition were also liked by the readers. I received the feedback of the readers through letters and phone calls. From those experiences this book ‘Fort Cave- of Goa, Daman and Diu’ took it’s shape. Of course there are many contributions. Senior Historian Dr. Ravindra Armadas, Prof. of J.J. School arts Shri Douglus, M. Johnser. Prof. Bharati Joshi, Dr. Arun Joshi made the reference books available to me.

The tour of Goa, would have been incomplete without the support of Shri Anant Krishnaji Jadhav, Ms. Sangita Jadhav, Sri. Sandip Karnik and his family, Kuldeep Pokharkar, Shri. Ravindra Lad, the technical officer of Navy Mr. Vishal Sonawane, Vivek Tetvilkar. The valuable information provided by Dr. Varsha Kamat and her husband and the registrar of Goa University Dr. Vijay Chandra Kamat has greatly contributed to the book.

The scholar of archeology and President of Konkan Itihas Parishad Hon. Dr. Daud Dalvi accepted my request and graced the book with his Preface has surely added value to the book. I shall always remain in his debt for the same.

Shri. Vikas Jadhav from Viz Vision has set the book with attractive typesetting, design and printing Mr. Vijay Kharde has given the book a suitable cover page and neat lettering, Vivek Tetvilkar and Mahendra Konde, the members of the family has provided great support in this journey. Shri. Vishwanath Salavi always stood by me throughout the process has also welcomed the book. Thanking him would mean loosening the bond of affection.

Shri. Eknath Shinde, district head of Thane, Shiv Sena had always appreciated my work wholeheartedly. The help received from Mr. Vilas Thuse, ex-President of Thane Municipal Corporation has always been motivating enough on this difficult path.

‘Durgayatri’ and ‘Durg Sampada Thanyachi’ are the two books with two editions each. I have also received a great response to my other books namely ‘Thane Killa’, ‘Gadkillyachya Jave Gava’ and ‘ Vikhuralelya Itihaskhuna’. With the same trust I present this book for the inquisitive tourists and history lovers, ‘FORT CAVES OF -GOA, DAMAN AND DIU.

The subject of Hero Stones was neglected for long because of the misunderstandings and lack of awareness. Today at Bharat Etihas Sanshodhan, the Hero Stones are treated as the sources of information for the research. That is why the scholars have diverted their attention towards them.

In the last 7 to 8 years my books namely ‘Vikhuralelya Etihas Khuna’ and ‘Durgaleni- Div, Daman Goa’ and also through my articles in newspapers I have published information on Hero Stones. After reading those published matter, Mr. Dalavi had suggested that there should be an independent book on Hero Stones in simple Marathi language. He was willing to publish that through ‘Etihas Parishad, Konkan.’ He also suggested writing on the Hero Stones from Maharashtra State.  This had some challenges because the Hero Stones are located in nook and corner of the villages, temples, hills, on the borders of the towns of Maharashtra. Some of them had lovely events carved on them. But there are no inscriptions talking about the names and details of those Heroes. So it was difficult to write about such nameless Hero Stones. Mr. Dalavi also insisted on the information should not be based on mythology or folk tales. In the region of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh or even in Gujarat, Rajasthan there are Hero Stones or Sati Stones with the names of the Heroes, Kings and the Sati in the form of inscriptions. But there are no such inscriptions on the Hero Stones in Maharashtra, with an exception of Mathagaon. In my travel for Hero Stones for last 45 years I have come across number of them on different forts and in the region of Sahyadri Mountain ranges. Now I had to start my search for inscriptions on the Hero Stones. I read the articles written on Hero Stones. I came across the book ‘Memorial Stones’ published in the year 1982 by Gunther D. Sontheimer and Setter S. who were the scholars in the Culture of Maharashtra. I also came across some information at Karnataka University and Dharwad. ….

My other books namely ‘Durgyatri’, ‘Durgsampada Thanyachi’, Thane Killa’, Vikhuralelya Etihas Khuna’, Fort Caves- Goa, Daman and Diu’, have been well received by the readers. I expect the same love and affection from the readers and scholars of History for this new project of ‘Hero Stones of Maharashtra’.
